A visit at Parthenonas
Four kilometers winds the narrow street uphill. Then the first little houses of Parthenon can be seen. They are spread over the lush green hills of the village, which rises to 400 meters high over the Gulf of Toroneos. The small stone buildings have flat sloped roofs of dull red brick, are two floors high and almost snuggle up on the slopes. Some houses are painted ocher-yellow or white and are well preserved. Others are recognised from near as ruins with half-collapsed roofs, partly decayed exterior walls and windows.
The Parthenon village was abandoned in 1970 by its last inhabitants. "By then most villagers had already moved down to Neos Marmaras by the sea. The new village is located six kilometers away and exists since 1920" says Paul Karapapas, who runs the tavern Parthenon in the village up the hill. Here they had no electricity, no running water, no real livelhood until the Exodus. On the other hand, the place was spared of much unpleasant modernization the old charm remained. Today, Parthenon, whose history began 700 years ago, is under heritage protection. Wealthy Greeks from the 120 km away lying Thessaloniki have faithfully restored several houses and also use them as holiday homes. The old school was lovingly established as the Museum of Ethnology.
You can either travel from Neas Marmaras to Parthenon by car or you hike up the road and enjoy the spectacular nature and a unique view of the Gulf of Toroneos and the opposite peninsula Kassandra.
